About the Author
Leah Hawker is a South African professional photographer. She completed her studies at Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2005 with a body of work that dealt with sexual stereotyping. Her passion for image making evolved from a fascination with gender roles in society. She enjoys working closely with individuals, corporates and non-governmental organisations to promote positive, diverse and relevant images of women.
Her photography covers birth, nudes, documentary features, art-based and editorial projects. She shows her work and participates in exhibitions – her diptych titled “60 days (Pen & Hlomla)”, a reflection on motherhood and infant mortality, showed at the 2018 Sasol New Signatures Awards in the Pretoria Art Museum. The images exhibited were created during this Breastfeeding 101 project, which has taken three years. When she’s not working on the location you’ll find her in her light-filled studio based in the old textile district of Woodstock, overlooking Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak.
